Using a Student Selector in Class
A roster wheel gives teachers another way to choose a student for a question, reading assignment, or classroom task. Explain the routine and give students time to think before selecting a name.
A roster wheel gives teachers a visible way to select an entry from a class list. Explain the routine, allow students time to think, and decide in advance how students can pass or respond in a way that fits the activity.
Quick Start Guide for Teachers
Save for Later
Sign in and use Save Wheel to store your text-entry roster in My Wheels. Load it from your account when you need it again.
2. Use During Lessons
Display the wheel on your classroom screen or smartboard. One click spins the wheel and randomly selects a student to answer your question or participate.
Remove or Keep
For a no-repeat round, start with one entry per student and remove each selected entry before the next spin. Remove duplicate entries separately if a name appears more than once.
Multiple Classes
Sign in and save a separately named wheel to My Wheels for each class roster you plan to reuse.
Effective Classroom Applications
- •Checking for Understanding: After teaching a concept, add the students you want to include and spin to choose one of the names entered for a quick comprehension check.
- •Reading Aloud: Select students to read passages during literature, language arts, or content-area reading without the awkwardness of manual selection.
- •Problem Solving: Call on students to work through math problems, science questions, or critical thinking exercises at the board.
- •Discussion Facilitation: Randomly select students to share opinions, make predictions, or contribute to Socratic seminars and class debates.
- •Homework Review: Spin to choose one of the names entered to share a homework answer. Choose Remove after each turn if you want to avoid selecting the same entry again.
- •Entry/Exit Tickets: Select students to share their entrance or exit ticket responses, providing formative assessment data.
Ways to Use a Student Selector
- ✓Select from a roster: Spin to choose an entry from the class list you provide.
- ✓Run a no-repeat round: Remove each selected entry; remove duplicate entries separately when you want to exclude a name.
- ✓Choose a response: Use a selected name to invite a student to answer a question, read, or contribute to a discussion.
- ✓Set expectations: Explain how the selection will work and allow time to think before asking for a response.
- ✓Keep class lists organized: Save a separately named wheel to My Wheels for each class roster you plan to reuse.
Best Practices for Implementation
Set clear expectations early: Explain how you use the roster wheel and offer students time to prepare before asking for a response.
Allow think time: After spinning the wheel and before expecting an answer, give students 10-30 seconds to formulate a response or confer with a partner.
Offer alternatives: Consider allowing a selected student to pass, confer with a partner, or choose another way to respond that fits the activity.
Respond supportively: Thank students for contributing and use follow-up questions or discussion to explore their answers.
Adapting for Different Grade Levels
Elementary: Make the wheel extra visible and celebratory. Use sound effects and animations to create excitement. Consider letting selected students spin the wheel for the next person.
Middle School: Balance randomness with choice by occasionally letting the selected student pick the next topic or choose whether to answer or pass (with a requirement to participate later).
High School: Use a roster wheel to choose participants for Socratic seminars, fishbowl discussions, and debate positions.
