Using a Wheel to Select Group Members
When you need to organize a participant list, use the wheel to select one name at a time. You decide how to record each selection and distribute names among groups.
Selecting names from a list can make group assignment easier to follow. The tool does not evaluate relationships, skills, or experience, so review the resulting groups and adjust them to fit the activity.
How to Assign Participants to Groups
Method 1: Sequential Assignment
Step 1: Decide how many groups you need and how you want to rotate assignments.
Step 2: Spin the wheel to select a name and record that person in Group 1.
Step 3: Remove the selected name, spin again, and record the result in Group 2.
Step 4: Continue rotating through the groups until everyone is assigned. Group assignment is done manually; the wheel selects one name at a time.
Method 2: Captain Selection
Step 1: Spin the wheel to select group leaders or captains and record them.
Step 2: Remove selected captains from the wheel.
Step 3: Continue selecting names and record each person under a captain in your chosen rotation.

A Simple Group-Assignment Workflow
- ✓Start with a roster: Add one name per entry to the wheel.
- ✓Select one person at a time: Spin the wheel and record the displayed name in your chosen group.
- ✓Prevent repeats: Remove a selected name before the next spin when you want each roster entry used once.
- ✓Choose your rotation: Decide how names will be distributed among groups; the tool does not create group assignments automatically.
- ✓Review the result: Check each group and adjust assignments to fit the activity before sharing them.
- ✓Keep a record: Write selected names in a shared document or on a board as you go.
Practical Group-Assignment Notes
Assign roles if useful: Within each group, you can designate roles such as facilitator, timekeeper, recorder, or presenter.
Set expectations: Share the task, timeline, and any assessment criteria before group work begins.
Track progress: Use check-ins or individual task assignments if they fit the project.
Help people get started: Share an icebreaker or short introduction prompt when group members do not know one another.
Managing Group Size and Configuration
Choose a size for the activity: Decide how many people each task needs; there is no single group size that fits every activity.
Plan for remainders: If the participant count does not divide evenly, decide in advance which groups will have an extra person.
Record each selection: The wheel selects one name at a time; record names in your own group list and review it before starting.
